Methodology
How this was measured
Fetched each of the 36 public SEO and web-performance guide articles from software vendors and developer publications, following redirects, and counted the pages whose rel=canonical — in the HTML head or the HTTP Link header — names a URL other than the one finally served. A page declaring no canonical at all is counted as self-referencing, not as a conflict.
One observation: Whether the page's rel=canonical names a URL other than the one finally served, after redirects.
How the cohort was chosen: The same hand-curated cohort as seo-guide-articles-answer-block.txt (2026-09-04), reused deliberately so the two figures describe the same set of pages and can be quoted side by side. Every URL was fetched once with this app's own Kinetix-Auditor/1.0 user agent on 2026-09-04 and confirmed to return HTTP 200 with an H1; one URL per host, no customer data and no private endpoint involved.
Every request was a single polite fetch per site with a short timeout and no retries. Only aggregate counts are published — no per-site result.
Limitations
What this figure does not tell you
- The cohort is a named, hand-curated list, not a random sample of the web. The share describes these sites, not every site.
- It is one measurement on the date shown. Any site can change its setup the next day.
- 3 of the 39 listed URLs could not be reached or read on the day and were left out of the sample rather than counted either way.
- URLs that differ only by scheme, a www. prefix, a trailing slash or letter case count as the same page, and a page declaring no canonical counts as self-referencing. This measures how often the instruction is issued, not whether any crawler obeyed it.
