What the Free XML Sitemap URL Extractor checks

  • Discovers the sitemap via robots.txt (or the default /sitemap.xml path) and fetches it
  • Extracts every <loc> URL from the sitemap, following a sitemap index down into its child sitemaps
  • Reports how many URLs were found in total and whether the list shown was truncated

Frequently asked questions

Where does this tool find the sitemap?

It reads your robots.txt file for a Sitemap: directive first, since that's the standard way a site points crawlers at its sitemap. If robots.txt doesn't declare one, it falls back to checking the conventional /sitemap.xml path.

What if my sitemap is actually a sitemap index?

A sitemap index is a sitemap of sitemaps — a single file that lists several child sitemap files rather than URLs directly (common on larger sites that split their sitemap by content type or date). This tool follows the index down into its child sitemaps and returns the combined flat list of real page URLs, not the index file's own list of sitemap files.

Why is the list capped at 500 URLs?

The result renders as a single copyable text list rather than a paginated table, so an uncapped list from a sitemap with tens of thousands of URLs would be unusable to actually read or copy. If your sitemap is larger than that, the tool tells you how many URLs it found in total even though only the first 500 are shown.

Does this tool check whether the URLs actually work?

No — this tool only extracts what the sitemap lists. It doesn't run a live HTTP check on each URL. For that, use KinetixSEO's free Broken Link Checker on individual pages, or the full paid audit for a whole-site crawl.
