What is cloaking in SEO?
Cloaking in SEO is showing search engine crawlers different content than real visitors see, specifically to manipulate rankings. It is not a gray-area tactic or a judgment call — every major search engine, including Google and Bing, names cloaking explicitly in its webmaster guidelines as a violation that can get a site removed from the index entirely. The defining feature isn't that two versions of a page exist (that happens legitimately all the time), it's the intent: the split exists only to trick the crawler into ranking content the human visitor never actually sees. That distinction — deception aimed at the ranking algorithm rather than the reader — is what separates cloaking from ordinary technical SEO work like serving optimized markup or adapting layout for mobile devices.

A concrete example of cloaking
The textbook case is a page that detects a search engine's crawler user-agent and serves it dense, keyword-stuffed text while showing ordinary browsers a normal-looking page. A site selling shoes might, on request from Googlebot's user-agent string, return a wall of text repeating "cheap running shoes online" dozens of times in gray-on-white or hidden divs — then serve any regular visitor a clean product page with none of that text. The crawler indexes the stuffed version and ranks it; the visitor lands on something else entirely. This is functionally close to keyword stuffing, but cloaking adds the extra layer of deception: the stuffing is hidden from anyone who isn't the crawler itself, which is what makes it a clear-cut violation rather than just poor writing.
How cloaking gets detected
Cloaking is easy to catch because it requires comparing what two different requesters received, and that comparison is mechanical, not subjective:
- Fetch as the crawler. Tools that fetch a URL using the search engine's declared user-agent (or its actual IP ranges) capture exactly what the bot receives.
- Load the page as a real visitor. A normal browser session, ideally with JavaScript execution and cookies enabled, captures what a human sees.
- Diff the rendered output. Any meaningful difference in visible text, links, or redirects between the two — beyond routine personalization — is the signature of cloaking.
- Check for user-agent or IP sniffing in server logs. Server-side logic that branches specifically on "is this a known bot" is a stronger signal of intent than any single content mismatch.
Because detection just requires two fetches and a diff, it's one of the easier black-hat patterns for an algorithm — or an auditor — to flag automatically.

Not every difference between what a crawler sees and what a visitor sees is cloaking. Sites that render content client-side with JavaScript, serve different HTML to mobile versus desktop, or run A/B tests are all technically showing "different" content to different requesters — but none of that counts as cloaking as long as the substantive content and intent match. The line is whether a reasonable crawl would find the same core information a visitor gets, just possibly formatted differently.
