What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search where the user gets their answer directly on the results page — through a featured snippet, knowledge panel, or AI Overview — and never clicks through to any website at all. The search engine displays the fact, definition, or summary inline, so the reader's need is met before they ever scroll to a blue link, even when a specific site's page is the underlying source of that answer.

Someone searching "what time is it in Tokyo right now" almost always gets the answer displayed instantly on the results page, so there's no reason to click through — even though the underlying data came from a specific website that maintains that time-zone information.
AI Overviews are the main reason this mechanism now reaches beyond quick facts into multi-step and comparison questions that used to require a click. As AI Overviews summarize more of these complex queries directly on the results page, rankings and impressions stop guaranteeing a session: a page can hold the top position and still see traffic flatten, because the answer already left the reader satisfied. The clearest sign of this shift shows up in click-through rate: a falling CTR at a stable rank usually means a query has gone zero-click, even though the ranking report alone looks unchanged.
