What is a vector embedding?
A vector embedding is a numerical representation of a piece of text — a word, sentence, or whole document — expressed as a list of numbers that positions it in a high-dimensional space. Texts with similar meaning end up positioned close together in that space, even if they don't share the same words. This is the mathematical basis modern AI systems use to judge semantic similarity, whether they're ranking search results, retrieving context for a chatbot answer, or clustering related content.

The value of an embedding is that it captures meaning, not phrasing. Two sentences with almost no vocabulary in common can still land near each other in vector space if they're about the same underlying idea, while two sentences that share several words but mean different things will land far apart.
For example, a retrieval system can match a query asking "why is my crawl budget being wasted" to a passage titled "fixing wasted crawl budget," even though the wording differs. Neither string contains the other's exact phrasing, but their embeddings sit close together because both are about the same concept — so the system surfaces the passage as relevant.

This is also why AI answer engines don't rely on exact keyword matching the way traditional search once did — they retrieve passages based on embedding similarity to the query's meaning. If you want the mechanics of how that reshapes optimization, the GEO explainer covers generative engine optimization in depth, and the LLM SEO guide breaks down how optimizing for AI answers differs from classic search ranking.
