What is a link scheme?

A link scheme is any pattern of link exchange, buying, or automated link generation specifically intended to manipulate a site's search ranking through artificial link volume rather than genuine editorial endorsement. Search engines explicitly prohibit link schemes under their spam policies because the links exist to game an algorithm, not to help a reader find something useful.

A textbook example

A link-for-a-link exchange network — dozens of unrelated sites agreeing to link to each other purely to inflate backlink counts — is a classic link scheme. Nothing about the links serves a visitor: a pet-supply blog, a car-insurance site, and a plumbing company have no real reason to reference one another, but they all link back and forth because the arrangement pads everyone's link profile.

Compare that to two genuinely related businesses, say a wedding photographer and a local venue, linking to each other because customers actually move between the two sites. That link exists for navigation and real endorsement, not to manufacture ranking signal. Same surface mechanic — a link between two sites — but opposite intent, which is exactly the distinction search engines look for when evaluating whether a link pattern counts as manipulative.

Why it matters

Because link schemes are judged on intent and pattern rather than any single link, sites that build them risk manual actions or algorithmic devaluation once the pattern is detected. Two related manipulation tactics worth knowing: a private blog network is one way schemes generate artificial links at scale, while negative SEO covers cases where someone builds a link scheme pointing at a competitor's site to get it penalized rather than to help their own.
