AI overview definition

An AI Overview is an AI-generated summary block that a search engine inserts directly into its results page, synthesizing an answer from several sources rather than simply listing links to them. It's a general term for a pattern now common across search engines: instead of forcing users to click through multiple listings, the engine reads a handful of relevant pages, writes a condensed answer, and presents that answer as the first thing a searcher sees.

Google's AI Overviews is the most visible implementation of this pattern, but the same concept shows up under different names in other engines' summary features. The mechanism is consistent even when the branding isn't.

How it changes the results page

Concretely, an AI Overview appears above the traditional organic listings, pushing standard blue-link results further down the page. Rather than a single link, it displays a synthesized paragraph or two of answer text, with inline citations pointing to a handful of source pages the summary drew from. A user can read the answer without clicking anywhere, or follow one of the cited links to see the original source in full.

This matters for site owners because visibility now depends on being one of the pages an AI Overview chooses to cite, not just ranking high in the traditional list below it.
